Obwohl dies nur ein unbedeutender Teil der 2,26 Milliarden Acres der Vereinigten Staaten ist, sind Deponien f\u00fcr einen gro\u00dfen Teil des Methans (CH<sub>4<\/sub>)-Emissionen (USDA, 2025). Die EPA berichtet, dass im Jahr 2021 122 Millionen Tonnen CO2-\u00c4quivalent Methan aus Deponien ausgesto\u00dfen wurden. Die US-Umweltschutzbeh\u00f6rde EPA ber\u00fccksichtigt Faktoren wie die Verweildauer des Gases in der Atmosph\u00e4re, seine Energieaufnahmef\u00e4higkeit und andere chemische Einfl\u00fcsse der Atmosph\u00e4re, um das GWP zu bestimmen. Aufgrund der Auswirkungen von Methan auf unser Klima ist es wichtig, den Beitrag von Deponien zu den Emissionen genau zu quantifizieren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Obwohl die US-Umweltschutzbeh\u00f6rde EPA eine angemessene Sch\u00e4tzung der Methanemissionen des Landes liefert, gelten einige der Methoden zur Ermittlung dieser Zahlen f\u00fcr M\u00fclldeponien als veraltet. In einer Studie vom M\u00e4rz 2024 nutzte Carbon Mapper, eine gemeinn\u00fctzige Emissionsorganisation, Luftaufnahmen, um Unstimmigkeiten zwischen den Messergebnissen der Mission und den ver\u00f6ffentlichten Zahlen der EPA in ihrem Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program aufzuzeigen. Tats\u00e4chlich waren die Luftemissionsraten der Anlagen im Durchschnitt 1,4-mal h\u00f6her als in den EPA-Berichten angegeben (Carbon Mapper, 2024). Dieses Projekt verdeutlicht die Notwendigkeit, die tats\u00e4chlichen Methanemissionen von M\u00fclldeponien zu ermitteln, da aktuelle Erkenntnisse darauf hindeuten, dass sie h\u00f6her sind als die derzeitigen Sch\u00e4tzungen. Dank der bis 2018 zur\u00fcckreichenden Abdeckung kann eine pr\u00e4zise Zeitreihe von Emissionsdaten f\u00fcr Standorte weltweit abgeleitet werden. Floodlight strebt h\u00f6chste Ergebnisqualit\u00e4t durch den Einsatz von Modellen zur Bewertung der atmosph\u00e4rischen Ausbreitung an. Zus\u00e4tzlich wird in allen Schritten jedes einzelnen Projekts ein strenger Qualit\u00e4tssicherungsprozess angewendet. Die Treibhausgasemissionen von Deponien sind insgesamt erheblich.
