In den letzten Jahren kam es zu einigen Ver\u00e4nderungen der \u00fcblichen Muster. Laut einer Forschungsarbeit aus dem Jahr 2023 nahm die durchschnittliche Meereisausdehnung in der Antarktis vom Beginn des Satellitenzeitalters 1979 bis 2014 im Allgemeinen j\u00e4hrlich zu. Trotz eines einj\u00e4hrigen Erholungsschubs war nach dem Maximum von 2014 ein starker R\u00fcckgang zu beobachten. Anfang 2022 markierte die Eisfl\u00e4che einen extremen Tiefpunkt, da die Eisfl\u00e4che 24% kleiner war als im klimatologischen Durchschnitt von 1981\u20132010 (Zhang und Li).<\/p>\n<p>Bis heute sp\u00fcrt die Nordhalbkugel die vollen Auswirkungen des Sommers. In der Antarktis herrscht Winterschlaf, und das Meereis befindet sich in der Wachstumsphase. Solche Ereignisse werfen die Frage auf: Ist das antarktische Meereis aufgrund des Klimawandels an einem Punkt angelangt, von dem es kein Zur\u00fcck mehr gibt? Diese Frage l\u00e4sst sich nicht so einfach beantworten. Obwohl die Antwort \u201eJa\u201c lauten k\u00f6nnte, m\u00fcssen zwei wichtige Punkte gekl\u00e4rt werden. Erstens gibt es laut Zhang und Li viele Mechanismen, die f\u00fcr das Wachstum und den R\u00fcckgang des Meereises verantwortlich sind. Um zu verstehen, ob der Klimawandel die Hauptursache f\u00fcr den dramatischen Eisr\u00fcckgang ist, bedarf es daher einer tieferen Analyse der Ver\u00e4nderungen des gesamten Systems. Zweitens ist der Trend erst seit etwa zehn Jahren zu beobachten. In Bezug auf das Klima ist dies nicht ausreichend, um konkrete Schlussfolgerungen zu ziehen. Obwohl die moderne Forschung gro\u00dfe Fortschritte bei der Aufkl\u00e4rung der Gr\u00fcnde f\u00fcr das schrumpfende Eis erzielt hat, wird es noch viele Jahre dauern, bis best\u00e4tigt ist, ob der Klimawandel einen signifikanten Beitrag leistet. Satellitendaten bilden dabei die Grundlage f\u00fcr die Studien, auch in Zukunft.<\/p>\n<p>Forscher nutzen optische, Radar- und LiDAR-Satelliten, um die Ausdehnung und Dicke des Meereises t\u00e4glich bis j\u00e4hrlich zu \u00fcberwachen. Ohne diese Daten w\u00e4re die Erforschung des Meereises nahezu unm\u00f6glich.
